PUTRAJAYA — May 9, 2019: Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has described the mistakes, damage and actions of the Barisan Nasional administration as a major hurdle affecting the recovery of the country and well-being of the people which the Pakatan Harapan government is attempting to bring about.
“We found the damage was so huge so much so we do not have the capacity to fulfill the pledges as soon as possible.
“In fact, our priority changed when we found the impairment is so great and severe and we have to address it first,” said Mahathir in a message in conjunction with the Pakatan government’s first year in charge of the country. The event at the International Convention Centre here was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, ministers and Pakatan party leaders.
Bernama reported him as saying also that the government had to renegotiate contracts awarded by former PM Datuk Seri Najib Razak himself and succeeded in saving RM22.8 billion as well as billions of stolen money.
The other measures include investigation into the 1MDB scandal and rehabilitating of agencies like Tabung Haji and Felda that were damaged.
Mahathir remarked that despite being exposed of all wrongdoings, Najib and friends are still disputing the abuse of power, corruption and cheating.
Not feeling satisfied with that, Mahathir pointed out that the opposition and others have in the past few months been attempting to create a perception that the government did not care for Islam and the Malays and the government was portrayed as bending to the demands of non-Muslims to the point of pawning the interest of the Malays and Muslims.
“My message is — enough of using racial and religious issues for political interests,” he said.
