KOTA KINABALU — October 19, 2017: Former federal minister and Parti Warisan Sabah president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal was arrested tonight over investigations into the alleged misappropriation of RM1.5bil meant for rural development.
He was detained about 9pm by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) after four hours of questioning here, after having returned earlier from Kuala Lumpur.
Warisan deputy president Darell Leiking said Shafie was likely to be taken to court tomorrow — his 60th birthday — for the MACC to request for a remand order.
MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Datuk Azam Baki confirmed Shafie’s arrest.
Some hours earlier Shafie was accompanied by his lawyers Martin Tommy and Loretto Padua Jr. to the state MACC office.
His wife Datin Seri Shuryani Shuaib and Parti Warisan vice-president Datuk Peter Anthony, the first person to be arrested in relation to the current investigations, were present.
The projects under the Rural and Regional Development Ministry were implemented from 2009 to 2015 during Shafie’s time as minister there.
Since October 5, the MACC had remanded eight individuals, including Warisan and Umno leaders. They included Shafie’s younger brothers – Silam Umno chief cum Lahad Datu assemblyman Datuk Mohd. Yusof and businessman Hamid; Anthony; Tenom Umno Youth chief Jamawi Jaafar and Tawau Umno Youth chief Ariffin Kassim. Only Yusof remains remanded.
