KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 7 2020 : The lawyer of Muhammad Yusoff Rawther has demanded for Attorney General Tan Sri Tommy Thomas to recuse himself from deciding whether to prosecute Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for allegedly outraging his client’s modesty.
Haniff Khatri Abdulla said Thomas’ impartiality was questionable as he had recorded his opinion that previous sodomy charges against Anwar were part of a political conspiracy.
Haniff said Thomas had done so in an article posted on the Bar Council website eight years ago following the case involving Anwar’s former aide Saiful Bukhari Azlan.
“Having formed such an opinion clearly shows elements of conflict of interest, giving rise to questions of whether (Thomas) is qualified in making a decision on the investigation papers handed over by the police after investigating Yusoff’s complaint, ” Haniff said in a statement today.
The police had completed their investigation within a month of Yusoff lodging his complaint on Dec 7 last year before handing over the case to the Attorney General’s office for further action.
Yusoff had voluntarily took a polygraph test last month to assist investigations while Anwar gave his statement to the police on Dec 12.
