KUALA LUMPUR — Jan. 29, 2018: Malaysia will be the first country outside China to use the Alibaba Cloud’s City Brain initiative in smart city traffic management.
The platform has been adapted and evolved from Hangzhou City Brain by using artificial intelligence (AI) to produce real-time traffic predictions using its video and image recognition technologies.
“The initiative is driven by Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and Alibaba Cloud to avoid or significantly reduce congestion and to increase road safety and emergency services efficiency,” said Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor when announcing the collaboration between MDEC, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Alibaba Cloud Malaysia today.
He said that statistics from Alibaba Cloud show that the pilot of the smart traffic management system in Hangzhou which started in September 2016 has recorded a 15 per cent increase in traffic flow or speed.
A proof of concept project was conducted locally last August in collaboration with several data providers from the private sector, with MDEC providing project management and data analytics and Alibaba Cloud providing platform and subject matter expertise.
As Malaysia City Brain develops, AI technology will help to benefit the people. These will include better traffic flow, faster response times from emergency services and handling of road traffic incidents and safety, said Tenglu Adnan. — Bernama
