KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 2018: Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin today confirmed that he will be contesting the party president’s post.

Khairy this afternoon posted an image of his nomination form on his Instagram account which stated that he is contesting the party’s number one post.

He later issued a statement confirming his intention to contest the president’s post.

Others who had been confirmed to be contesting the post are acting president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and blogger Rahmat Azim Abdul Aziz.

The Mole was informed that there were also several other candidates who submitted their candidacy to contest the party’s number one post before the 5pm deadline today.

Khairy, 42, had earlier this month announced his candidacy for one of the three vice-president’s posts.

However, his supporters in the party, made up of mostly members of the Youth wing have been urging him to spearhead the party’s revival after its defeat in the recent 14th general election.

In his statement, Khairy said he had retracted the form for his candidacy for the vice-president post, which was submitted on June 1 before filing in a new one for the president’s post.

“This is not an easy decision for me. In fact, until a few days ago, I was resolute on my decision to only contest the vice-president post. However, after contemplating the future and survival of Umno in the current situation, I decided to contest the Umno president’s post because I want party members to have a choice on which direction the party should be led,” he said.

The son of a former diplomat was educated in politics at Oxford University and married to the daughter of former Umno president and prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
