Kenin wins first tennis Grand Slam; achieves childhood dream

AMERICAN Sofia Kenin fulfilled her childhood ambition by winning a first Grand Slam title today at the Australian Open with victory over Spain’s Garbine Muguruza in three sets after losing the first.

In winning 4-6 6-2 6-2 against two-time major winner Muguruza, the 21-year-old who moved to the United States from Russia with her parents when she was only a few months old becomes the eighth first-time women’s champion in the past 12 Slams.

In the semi-finals the 14th seeded Kenin beat local favourite Ash Barty despite trailing the world number one for most of the match.
