ALOR SETAR — April 10, 2017: Kedah has in principle agreed with a federal government plan to open the border checkpoint at Bukit Kayu Hitam round-the-clock from 18 hours presently.
The extension is also to encourage foreign visitor arrivals and reduce traffic congestion at the customs and immigration (CIQ) complex during peak hours.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md. Hanipah told the state assembly today that the prime minister and home minister have given their nod to the plan, while also mindful of the security aspects.
“We can earn revenue from transportation, especially vehicles from Thailand that carry agricultural goods, vegetables and fruits into the country,” said Bashah.
He said that implemented, the move would spur Bukit Kayu Hitam’s growth as an industrial area, particularly in view of the state’s plan to establish a 6,000-acre tax-free zone. — Bernama
