Johor Sultan’s step-mother dies at 78

JOHOR BARU — March 18, 2019: The step-mother of Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, Tengku Puan Zanariah Tengku Ahmad, has died at the age of 78.

Her death was announced at  Sultan Ibrahim’s Facebook official page at 8.15 am today.

Tengku Zanariah is survived by her son Tunku Abdul Majid and daughters; Tunku Mariam, Tunku Noraini, Tunku Maimunah Ismailiah, Tunku Muna Najiah and Tunku Aminah Kalsom.

Born on July 5, 1940, in Pasir Mas, Kelantan, Tengku Zanariah was the the seventh of nine siblings of a Kelantan royal family.

She married the late Sultan Iskandar Sultan Ismail in 1961, which was a year before the latter divorced his first wife, Sultanah Khalsom Abdullah.

In 1982, she established the Women’s Council of Johor, an outfit which organises religious activities and distributes donations to the less fortunate.

Her reign as Johor Sultanah ended in 2010 following the death of Sultan Iskandar. She was later bestowed the title of Tunku Puan of Johor.

Tengku Zanariah was buried at the Mahmoodiah Royal Mausoleum here today.
