Hospital authorities: There was no negligence

KUALA LUMPUR: Authorities of Raja Perempuan Zainab (II) Hospital in Kota Baru, Kelantan said there was no element of negligence the treatment of  Siti Sapur Mat Rani, 53 as alleged by her family.


Its director Datuk Dr Ghazali Hasni Mohd Hassan (pic) told The Mole internal investigations revealed that the patient, who passed away on Dec 20, was already in the incurable stage when she was admitted.


“Our investigation showed there was no negligence at all.”




“She  was in irreversible condition due to the bleeding in her brain and secondary hypertension. We had consulted with Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital (HUSM) to refer the patient there as we have no neurosurgeon,” Dr Ghazali said.




However due to the patient’s critical condition, Dr Ghazali said HUSM too rejected the patient’s admission as she was not operable.


“We did not discharge the patient and the hospital staffs have worked their best to give continuous treatment to her,” he added.


The issue of mistreatment towards Siti Sapur was first highlighted in the Malay daily Sinar Harian on Dec 21.


A few days after it was published, Dr Ghazali responded to clarify the matter in the newspaper on Dec 24.


Dissatisfied with Dr Ghazali’s statement, one of Siti’s children wrote an open letter to Health Minister, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and Dr Ghazali, posting it in a blog called Jalan Sehala.


Prominent blogger Rocky Bru picked up the issue and in his latest posting said: “What the hospital should have done was to contact the blogger and his grieving family personally, not to engage in a media exchange. Hence, the open letter to the Minister.”


To this Dr Ghazali said: “I had to speak out to clarify and defend the hospital’s action because it is highlighted in the press as well.”


“If we did not do anything, the Ministry would ask why we did not respond to the news immediately.”


Dr Ghazali said in fact, one of the doctors who treated the deceased had actually spoken to one of Siti Sapur’s family member to explain the situation.


“If they were neither happy nor satisfied with the explanation, they are more than welcomed to see me. I, myself would want to settle this matter once and for all.”


“We never keep a secret from the family,” he added.


Dr Ghazali also urge the family to lodge a report with the hospital and provide details fo the staff alleged to have failed to carry out their duties.


“They have to be fair to us too. Let us know who were responsible, speak to us and we will take the necessary actions,” he added.
