KUALA LUMPUR — February 9, 2018: Pribumi Bersatu head strategist Dr. Rais Husin has been severely criticised in cyberspace over an offensive tweet last week.
Rais’s tweet ,which he posted on February 3, was: “A young girl committed suicide for being accused erroneously for stealing an IPhone by a teacher. While those who are stealing millions and billions are singing sha la la la! Some are supporting those thieves! Shame has evaporated!”
His critics commented that it was insensitive of Rais to use the death of a school girl as part of his Barisan Nasional-bashing campaign.
“Dr, please be sensitive about the issue. There is literally zero benefit in trying to politicise things like this,” wrote Vishnuu Panickar.
Another Twitter user by the name of Zaid Zikri expressed disgust with Rais’s tweet as he believe that the family of the deceased girl would be distraught if they ever read his tweet.
“Have some empathy Dr. This is life and death of a person. This should not be your political anecdote. What if the victim’s family read this? Disgusting,” wrote Zaid.
Another comment was by Amir, who tweeted, “Is this what you call a party strategist? There’s no branch meeting, it’s no wonder you can make this kind of statement. Give respect please.”
In response, Rais told The Mole that it is up for the people how they want to interpret his tweet.
“My tweet is self-explanatory. It depends on how they (people) want to interpret it.”
M. Vasanthapiriya, 13 died at the Seberang Jaya Hospital on Feb. 1.
