PUTRAJAYA, Aug 30 2018 : The government has no choice but to implement the Sales and Services Tax (SST) by Sept 1 despite various issues, or else it will fall into deficit, says Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng.

Lim said the country will experience a shortfall of RM4 billion if the SST is not rolled out, which would put a toll on the government’s economic performance.

“If we do not do this, there will be no revenue to cover the operating expenditure like paying salaries for government servants or building maintenance. We could not afford it,” he said during a media briefing on the SST here today.

Although the government has faced several hick-ups in implementing the new tax regime, Lim assured that these issues will be resolved. – Bernama
