KUALA LUMPUR – Feb 24, 2017: Federal Territories Umno Youth today denied that its plan to introduce a free petrol scheme for motorcyclists is to buy votes for the next general election.
Instead its chief Mohd Razlan Mohammad Rafii told The Mole that the scheme was planned out of concern for underprivileged motorcyclists.
Razlan on Wednesday announced that the wing will be giving free petrol to motorcyclists in every parliamentary constituency in the Federal Territories in the first week of every month.
The scheme is for those with motorcycles with an engine capacity of not more than 150cc and will start in April.
The announcement has not gone down well with netizens who support opposition parties.
They believe it is one of Barisan Nasional’s latest moves to bribe voters into supporting the ruling coalition.
It has also been slated by DAP Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng, who questioned the source of funding for the scheme.
Responding to the criticisms, Razlan insisted that the scheme has nothing to do with the election.
“We are assisting motorcyclists who are underprivileged and the government is also concerned.
“The scheme is merely an addition to our assistance programmes for the people in the federal territories in the past four years. There is no such thing as helping the people to win their votes.”
This initiative is said to be an extension of aid under the Concerned Territory programme launched in 2013.
Razlan said the wing receives funding from several local and international companies to provide the free petrol.
The soft launch of the scheme was held in Putrajaya on February 14 by Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.
