Four drown, four missing in fishing tragedy

BACHOK, June 30 2020: A boat carrying 20 people on a fishing trip capsized in a storm about 10 nautical miles off the Kuala Kemasin Base Jetty here last night.

Kelantan deputy police chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Abdullah Mohamad Piah said four of the men onboard the boat were found drowned while four others were still missing following the 8pm incident,

He said the others on board the boat have been rescued.

The boat was hit by strong waves during the storm causing it to overturn.

Other boats in the vicinity came to the rescue of the survivors and picked up the four drowned victims. All were brought ashore and sent to the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital in Kota Baru while the search-and-rescue operation continues until this morning.

Abdullah said the 14 anglers onboard the boat were from Kampung Padang Tok La, Pasir Mas, while the six others were the skipper and crew.

They had set out to sea from Kuala Besar, Kota Baru at 3pm.

Those who were found drowned were Mohd Syahrizan Daud, in his 40s, Muhamad Zaki Muhamad Nordin, 19, Wan Aminudin Wan Hussin, in his 60s , and a Thai national known only as Pokta, in his 50s.

The four who were still missing are Arman Ismail, 43, Harun Daud, in his 60s, Syafiq Abdul Halim, 30, and Che Wadi Bakar, in his 40s.
