KUALA LUMPUR — January 29, 2019: Malaysians who still have the patience to wait for the government’s firm official announcement on the fate of the East Coast Rail Link will have to wait a little longer but when exactly the decision will be made known is anyone’s guess.

Last week it was speculated that the announcement would be made yesterday and on Sunday Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said this would be made this week.

Today we are told that the government has yet to make a final decision, although Mahathir’s remarks pointed to which way the government was leaning on, since he talked of the cost factor in the longer run.

When asked by journalists for a firm answer if the project will be cancelled, he said “The finance minister will give a clear explanation as to what happened.”

And from Lim at a press conference: “I met with the prime minister this morning. He advised me not to announce anything for the time being. Please wait when we are ready to go.”
