KUALA LUMPUR — January 10, 2017: Penang footballer Faiz Subri has created history for himself and Malaysia by winning the Puskas Award for scoring the world’s best football goal in 2016.
The announcement came at 2.35 this morning at the FIFA Best Awards ceremony in Zurich which was attended by the Who’s Who in world football past and present.
Faiz received the award from Brazilian great Ronaldo, himself the scorer of many outstanding goals during his playing days.
Voting from all over the world closed just minutes before the winner was announced. Faiz won against Brazilian Marlone Azevedo da Silva and Venezuelan female player Daniuska Rodriguez.
Faiz scored the goal from a free-kick in February in a home game against Pahang.
