BEAUFORT, Jan 14 2020 : The Election Commission (EC) will install video cameras at all polling centers of the Kimanis by-election.
EC chairman Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun said the move was to ensure transparency during the electoral process.
He also assured that the secrecy of the ballots would not be compromised with the setting up of the cameras for the Jan 18 polls.
“The cameras would not in anyway compromise the secrecy of the voter’s ballot when they mark it,” he said in a statement today.
Azhar added that the placing of the cameras was to record the situation in the polling centers and will be done in accordance with procedural guidelines.
He said the video recordings would help in monitoring the situation at the polling centers and allow EC officers to review them if necessary, including for training purposes.
The Kimanis by-election is a straight fight between Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Mohamad Alamin and Parti Warisan Sabah’s Datuk Karim Bujang.
The by-election was called after an Election Court declared that the Kimanis election results in the 14th general election in May 2018 as null and void after it found discrepancies, including unaccounted additional votes in some ballot boxes.
