PUTRAJAYA, Jan 22 2020 : The Election Commission is expecting the automatic voter registration to be implemented by middle of next year.
EC chairman Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun said the projection was due to the fact that tender for the computer system for the process has now been awarded.
He, however, did not have the details of the tender as it was handled by the Finance Ministry.
Azhar, who was speaking to the media at the EC headquarters here today said the commission will try to get the automatic voter registration system operational even before the middle of next year deadline.
He said EC had meanwhile taken steps to determine the locality of new voters based on the address on their identity card.
“We have also started our voter education programme for Form Four students, and the programme has been well received,” he added.
Azhar said the module to educate students on the process of voting would be made public to avoid EC from being accused of trying to indoctrinate the students.
The parliament last year approved amendments to the Federal Constitution to lower the voting age from 21 to 18, and to allow for automatic voter registration.
