KUALA LUMPUR — Feb. 18, 2020: A despatch runner has pleaded not guilty to spreading fake news on Covid-19 at his Facebook page on January 27.

Shamsul Anuar Mohd. Khairi, 42, was accused of circulating a false statement aimed at causing public mischief that the virus was in a bus used by Chinese tourists and that it would be activated in extreme hot weather.

DPP Rajdeep Singh did not offer bail because the offence is non-bailable but lawyer P. Suthes for Anuar asked the court for a minimum sum as Anuar earns only RM1,500 per month and has five school-going children and a jobless sister to care for.

Magistrate M. Saravanan allowed bail at RM6,500 in one surety.
