Awards given by association which claims to have blessings from a royalty; recipients asked to pay RM5,000 as membership fee

ALOR SETAR — August 10, 2017: Police yesterday detained a man with the honorific datuk at a hotel here over his alleged involvement in a medal awards scam using the name of a royalty.

The man was picked up at a presentation ceremony following a tip-off on the event which was organised by a volunteer association in Perak.

“The cheating was done by linking the name of a royalty who was said to have given his blessings in awarding the medals,” said Kedah police chief Datuk Asri Yusoff today.

About 200 guests, including 95 medal recipients comprising several VIPs and retired civil servants from various states, attended the four-hour event officiated by a VIP.

Asri said the victims who were conferred the Ahli Kehormat Pingat Setia Raja Negara were asked to bank in RM5,000 each to the association’s account as membership fee.

“Although the association is registered with the Registrar of Societies, it cannot award any medal resembling those issued by a palace,” he said.

Following the arrest, police seized the backdrop of the ceremony, five souvenir plaques, a trophy, 65 sashes and 66 medals.

Those with information on the event are asked to contact the investigating officer at 013-5882930.  — Bernama
