Cyber crime victims continue unsafe online behaviour

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 16 2016 : Consumers who were victims of cyber crime in the last 12 months often continued their unsafe behaviour online, according a study conducted by cyber security company, Norton by Symantec.

In its latest Norton Cyber Security Insights Report 2016, the company said the complacency in consumer behaviour was concerning, given the rampant rate of cyber crime.

“Our findings show that people are growing increasingly aware of the need to protect their personal information online but are not motivated to take adequate precautions to stay safe,” Director, Asia Consumer Business, Symantec Asia
Pacific Pte Ltd, Chee Choon Hong told reporters at the launch of the report here today.

The report covers an online survey of 20,907 device users aged above 18 years across 21 markets.

The Malaysia sample reflects input from 1,000 device users.

In Malaysia, among those with at least one unprotected device, almost two in five or 38 per cent said they do not need protection as they do not do anything “risky” online.

Over half of the consumers said it has become harder to stay safe online over the past five years.

“While consumers remain complacent, hackers are refining their skills and adapting their scams to further take advantage of the people, making the need for consumers in Malaysia to take some action increasingly important,” said
Chee.

The report said some 74 per cent of consumers know they must actively protect their information online, yet they were still sharing password and engaging in other risky behaviours.

Meanwhile, 34 per cent of respondents had at least one unprotected device leaving their other devices vulnerable to ransomware, malicious website and phishing attacks.

Six in ten or 65 per cent of them said they believe entering financial information online when connected to public WiFi is riskier than reading their credit or debit card number aloud in a public place.

Chee advised consumers not to leave vulnerable information online by adopting basic behaviours including knowing the ins and out of public WiFi networks and not reusing the same passwords for multiple accounts.  – Bernama
