PUTRAJAYA — July 22, 2020: The number of double-digit daily new infections continued for a fourth straight day today, with another 16 confirmed in the last 24 hours to make the country’s total number of cases 8,831.

Of the eight local transmissions, seven affected Malaysians in Sarawak while of the eight imported cases, four were Malaysians and the others foreigners with either permanent resident status or with work permits.

Two new clusters have also been detected, bringing the total of active clusters to 21. Fifteen were detected in the last 11 days.

According to Health director-general Datuk Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah, the first new cluster in Port Klang involves four seamen on a ship while the second involves two patients who flew from Melbourne to Kuching via Kuala Lumpur.

The index case of the Port Klang cluster was a Russian who had recently travelled to Egypt and India.

The cluster was detected after tests were carried out on crew members before they returned to their home countries. Four of the 24 tested as of noon today were positive.

The index case of the second cluster was a Malaysian student who returned from Australia on July 15.
