KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 2020: The new maximum retail price of three-ply face masks will be RM1 per unit starting on Saturday (Aug 15).
Its maximum wholesale price will be 95 sen per unit.
According to the latest government gazette on the matter, the order applies to three-ply face masks (whether surgical or medical} that are worn either by ear loop, head loop or head tie-on.
The order, known as the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering (Determination of Maximum Price) (No. 2) (Amendment) (No. 2) Order 2020, was made by price controller Datuk Seri Hasnol Zam Zam Ahmad on Aug 10, with the approval of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi on the same day.
Alexander Nanta today told the media at parliament that the move to reduce the maximum retail price would help low-income families, especially those in the Bottom 40th percentile (B40), to buy face masks.
For now, the maximum retail price of such face masks is RM1.50 per unit.
Once enforced, companies found guilty of selling face masks above the RM1 ceiling price will be fined RM500,000 or compounded RM250,000 under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 (Act 723)..
As for individuals found guilty of the same offence, they will be fined RM100,000, or face three-year imprisonment, or compounded RM50,000.
The wearing of face masks was made compulsory in public places, especially in crowded areas on Aug 1 as an effort to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.
