Covid-19: Raid near Selayang market nets 1,368 illegal immigrants

Most of the 1,368 illegal immigrants arrested during a raid around the Selayang wholesale market yesterday were from Myanmar and Indonesia.

KUALA LUMPUR — May 12, 2020: A raid in areas surrounding the Selayang wholesale market yesterday led to the arrest of 1,368 illegal immigrants after the papers of 7,551 foreigners were scrutinised.

Of those arrested, close to 58 per cent or 790 were from Myanmar and another 421 from Indonesia. Some 261 were women and 98.

Covid-19 tests by the health ministry found all of them to be negative.

Among their offences were having no identification papers, overstaying, having fake permits and passes, said Immigration director-general Datuk Khairul Dzaimee Daud

They will be deported after serving whatever sentences imposed by the courts.
