KUALA LUMPUR, April 12 2020: A maximum price control scheme on essential items will be enforced from April 15 until the end of the movement control order (MCO), which has been extended to April 28..

Defense Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the scheme, normally imposed during festive seasons, was necessary to prevent irresponsible traders from taking advantage of the Covid-19 crisis to increase prices.

“The list of the products will be announced by the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry to ensure that there will be no increase of prices during the MCO,” said Ismail Sabri today.

He said daily checks have been conducted across the country with 1,205 special spot checks carried out yesterday involving businesses at retailers, wholesalers, and manufacturers.

He said the checks indicated that almost all essential items are at a stable level, in terms of availability, including face masks and sanitisers.
