Covid-19: People cannot be forced to wear masks

KUALA LUMPUR — March 24, 2020: Local authorities and supermarkets cannot go beyond the government’s guidelines and force people to ear face masks.

In fact not even the security personnel can ask people to do this.

In response to reports on the over-zealousness, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said this: “Do not make your own ruling more than that of those ordered by the Health Ministry.

“There are supermarkets not allowing customers in because they do not wear masks. This is not right.”

He said it is also wrong for people to block roads to stop others from entering and exiting their housing areas.

“This is also wrong, as that is the work of the police. Even the army is not putting up roadblocks…. the soldiers are merely assisting the police.

Federal Territories Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa said local authorities have been told they should not issue orders to force people to wear face masks.

“Such orders from municipal councils are not right.”
