PUTRAJAYA — Sept. 8, 2020: The number of new cases confirmed in the last 24 hours took another turn for the worse, with 100. Sixty-two of the cases were from the Benteng cluster in Sabah — this alone equal to the previous day’s total.

Eighty-five of the 100 were local transmissions. In addition to the cluster in Lahad Datu, there were 23 cases confirmed from the Sungai cluster in Kedah, with one detected in Perlis.

The Benteng cluster was detected on September 2 after 50 illegal immigrants were apprehended during a multi-agency operation. Screenings at Lahad Datu police found seven who were positive. The infection then spread to Tawau prison some 150 kilometres away.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said that of the 62 latest cases, 37 were from Lahad Datu and 25 from Tawau.

Another 12 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours, taking total recoveries to 9,136. The death toll remains at 128.
