KUALA LUMPUR: Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. expects the collaboration between Proton Holdings and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) to triple its market share here y 2015.

Mitsubishi Motors had two per cent share in the country's total industry volume last year and five per cent in the non-national car segment. It expects new projects with the national car-maker to help it penetrate further the Malaysian and Asean markets by offering new product lines, while broadening its network in the region.

"This is certainly positive for both companies and the industry," said Chief Execuive Officer Tetsuya Oda after unveiling the new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport VGT (variable geometry turbo) today.

Proton and MMC recently announced they were strengthening their collaboration via the joint production of engines at Proton, the contract assembly of Mitsubishi vehicles catering to the Asean market and the sharing of parts and components.

Oda said Mitsubishi Motors, the official distributor for MMC in the country, was confident sales would grow by 10 per cent this fiscal year to 13,000 units on the back of steady customer demand. It aims to sell over 200 units of the Pajero Sport VGT per month.

"This model has been a great success since its debut in Malaysia. To date it has found over 3,000 owners and with new advanced technology, the model is set to further widen the appeal," he said.

The fully-imported Pajero Sport VGT is priced at RM171,980 on the road, inclusive of a three-year warranty and two-year free maintenance package. It features a new five-speed automatic transmission with sport mode and better driving enjoyment assisted by steering wheel magnesium paddle shifters.
