KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 15 2020 : Former badminton ace Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei will be the first Malaysian athlete to have a wax figure at Madame Tussauds Hong Kong.
He is also the second Malaysian after actress Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh to receive the honour.
“I would never have imagined a wax figure of my own! Thank you @madametussaudshongkong for the privilege and I’m extremely honoured to be the first Malaysian sportsman to join the list,” said Lee in a Facebook posting today..
“Special shout-out to the Madame Tussauds Hong Kong team who were extremely patient and detailed during the detailing session. It was definitely a first for me!” he added.
Lee’s six-hour sitting session with the Madame Tussauds team was also shown in an official video.
Meanwhile Madame Tussauds, in a statement quoted Lee as saying that he was impressed at how its team meticulously recorded details such as the colour of his eyes and hair.
“I hope that my wax figure will inspire more Malaysians to showcase their talent on the global stage,” Lee was quoted as saying.
Lee, who was once ranked the world’s number one badminton player for a record 349 weeks retired from the sport last year, .
