CYBERJAYA, May 9 2018 : Initial investigations by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) have revealed that the spam calls received by many from early today was caused by a BOTS attack.

BOTS, or Internet robots, are also known as spiders, crawlers, and web bots. While they may be utilised to perform repetitive jobs, such as indexing a search engine, they often come in the form of malware.

MCMC in a statement said the calls were initiated anonymously from various sources with differing targets irrespective of political parties.

“We seek that everyone stop this act immediately and refrain from further use of such technical attacks as it could jeopardise the telecommunication network causing inconvenience to the public and a security risk,” it said.

MCMC said it had been receiving numerous complains of phones ringing and then the call drops since early this morning.

“For those getting such calls from unknown numbers please be advised to not answer it.

“MCMC and the service providers are continuing to investigate and in the event that the initiators is identified MCMC will take stern action as provided by the law,” it added.
