KUALA LUMPUR – Oct 16, 2015: A political analyst has told The Mole that the Barisan Nasional government can collapse if the ruling coalition failed to get the Malaysia’s Budget 2016 approved by the parliament.
Associate professor Mohd Azizudin Mohd Sani of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) said a failure on the part of BN parliamentarians to unite in support of the budget when it is tabled next week will cripple the federal government as it would have no fund.
“Even though it has never happened before, that doesn’t mean it cannot happen.
“If BN is unable to secure enough votes to get the budget approved, then they (BN) are not allowed to use the country’s fund,” he said.
Azizudin added that beside financial restrictions, failure to get the budget approved will also indicates that the present government is suffering from a serious trust deficit.
“It is akin to a vote of no confidence. The only difference is that a vote of no confidence affects the Prime Minister while disapproval of the country’s budget affects the entire federal government.
“In other words, it means that the present government has failed to command the trust of the majority and this will eventually lead to a snap poll,’ said Azizudin.
He said the country’s budget must be approved within the time frame it was given and that it cannot be re-tabled in the parliament.
“There are no second chances; if BN wants to continue to be the federal government then, by hook or by crook, they must get their budget approved by the parliament.
“But as it is, I am not sure what exactly will happen next week,” said Azizudin, when asked on the possibility of such a scenario taking place on the coming Budget Day.
Concerns over the budget not getting enough support even among BN parliamentarians have been heavily speculated within the blogosphere.
Anonymous bloggers from the pro-establishment ‘Unspinners’ blog wrote that “rebels” among BN members of parliament who are against Najib’s administration were scheming with opposition MPs to reject the budget.
It was also speculated that they will smear the budget presentation in a bid to pressure Najib to relinquish his premiership.
The blogger claimed that currently there are at least four BN parliamentarians who will definitely not going to support the budget.
They are Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (Pagoh), Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal (Semporna), Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah (Gua Musang) and Datuk Abdul Aziz Sheikh Fadzir 9Kulim-Bandar Baru).
The blogger questioned as to how many BN MPs will have the courage to stand up and defend the present government should the budget be criticised.
“How many of them (BN MPs) will exit through the back door?
“In fact, how many of them will not cast their vote in regards to the Malaysia’s Budget 2016?
“So we will see next week, out of the 133 BN MPs, who and how many will sabotage the budget,” the blogger wrote.
