KUALA LUMPUR – June 13, 2017: As if the deluge of fake news was not pesky enough, today’s technology has made it possible to create a fake social media chat screengrab in mere minutes.
And doing it is easy as ABC, with the only thing that stands in your way is just poor internet access.
Key in the right word in the search bar of your smartphone’s Google Playstore or Iphone’s App Store and you will find numerous of such simulator; the bulk of which is free to download and does not require any additional in-application purchases.
The Mole downloaded the most popular fake chat simulator and discovered that its ability to generate a screengrab of a fake Whatsapp chat being very impressive .
Every crucial aspect of a typical Whatsapp chat is customisable, including the user’s profile picture, status and time stamp of the message.
Whatsapp, however was not the only smartphone chat application that the simulator can generate.
The simulator can fabricate chats from several popular social media and chat applications such as Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Twitter, Instagram, Iphone’s pre-installed text messaging application and, oddly enough, Google Translate.
The Mole‘s attempts to get further information from the application’s developer, Vincenzo Cerminara, were unsuccessful.
The application, however, comes with a disclaimer stressing that it should only be used for harmless pranks.
Nonetheless, a spokesperson of the police’s Multimedia and Cyber Crimes Division told The Mole that such application have been widely used by unscrupulous online traders to produce fake testimonies.
“Those who feel that they had been victimised by people who used fake chats should lodge a police report. It may looks trivial to some but a crime is still a crime,” he said.
He said investigations involving fake chat screengrabs would depend on their contents.
“If the contents is libelous then it will be investigated under libel law,” he added.
