KUALA LUMPUR — Dec. 10, 2019: At least one Malaysian is among eight people feared dead after a volcano erupted on New Zealand’s White Island yesterday.

A Facebook post by the Malaysian High Commission in Wellington today stated that the commission was informed of this by authorities over there.

When contacted by Bernama today, a spokesperson at the High Commission said they were in the process of gathering information and having a meeting.

A volcanic eruption occurred on White Island, also known as Whakaari, 48 kilometres off the Bay of Plenty area on North Island, shooting a huge plume of ash and steam into the air when a group of tourists were visiting. So far eight people are unaccounted for and search and rescue efforts are continuing.
