KUALA LUMPUR — Aug. 4, 2020: Police this evening said they had also raided the offices of Astro and UnifiTv over a documentary on the treatment of migrants in areas placed under lockdown that was initially carried by the Qatar-based Aljazeera.
Initial press reports referred only to the raid on the Aljazeera office here but at that point there was nothing from the police to mention about the other two raids. Neither did the two local stations inform the press about the raids.
The three premises were raided after a warrant was obtained from the courts.
Federal police CID chief Datuk Huzir Mohamed said personnel from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission were involved in the raids.
The documentary titled “Locked Up in Malaysia’s Lockdown” focused on the detention of undocumented foreigners when strict restrictions were in place to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Police had initially said they were probing the satellite broadcaster for sedition and defamation.
