KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 2019 : Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has told Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng to be careful when issuing public statements as his words could affect the markets.
The PKR de-factor leader said he had reminded Lim that his words now reflect that of the Finance Ministry and government instead of the opposition.
“I did meet and inform Lim Guan Eng that the position of finance minister is of greater status.
“Every statement (of his) will become the reference point for investors,” he was quoted by the Malaysiakini news portal.
Moody’s had maintained that Malaysia’s debt was at 50.8 per cent of the entire economy while Lim insisted that it should be at least 80 per cent.
Anwar, who was a former deputy prime minister and finance minister said Lim and other ministers were obliged to be transparent and expose fraud.
“He may task one or two other ministers along with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to explain his revelations,” he said.
Anwar had been the finance minister from 1991 until his sacking in 1998.
