KUALA LUMPUR – December 4, 2018: Besides expressing an objection against any move to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), the rally this Saturday is also to demand the resignation of the minister who first triggered the issue.

One of the social media coordinators of the anti-ICERD rally, Maslinda Abdul Talib, insists that it is important for Minister’s Prime Minister’s Department, P. Waytha Moorthy, to resign because of his seditious statements.

According to the website of Sekretariat Kedaulatan Negara that is coordinating the non-governmental organisations involved in the rally, Moorthy should be held responsible for taking the initiative to ratify ICERD, an it deems seditious.

Maslinda claims the organisers expect a minimum of between 200,000 and 300,000 people to attend the rally at Dataran Merdeka. Other leaders involved had put forward a higher estimate, even as high as 500,000, which the square adjoining the Royal Selangor Club is not big enough to accommodate.

“The rally is basically to send a strong message to the government that the people do not need the ICERD or any other convention that can affect the federal Constitution.

“Besides, it is also to tell the government that we are thankful for its decision not to ratify the ICERD but demand a clearer, more concrete evidence that it will never be ratified by Malaysia,” said Maslinda.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun has also confirmed that Moorty will be called for questioning today.
