SHAH ALAM, Oct 23 2017 : Fire razed a hostel at a religious school in Kampung Bukit Lanchong here last night.

Selangor Fire and Rescue assistant director (Operations) Mohd Sani Harul said 14 personnel in two fire trucks rushed to Akademi Tahfiz Ihya Ul-Quran following a distress call at 8.30 pm, and fully extinguished the blaze after one hour.

He said three victims sustained injuries in the fire which razed 20 per cent of the 90 sq ft space located on the second floor of the three-storey building. The cause is being investigated.

Meanwhile, warden Mohd Khairul Ni’mat Doll Kawaid, 33, told reporters when met at the location, that 17 students aged nine and 17 years who were having lessons on the ground floor were ushered out of the building when staff were alerted of the fire around 8.15 pm.

He did not dismiss the possibility that the fire could have started from a mosquito coil that was lighted in the hostel.

“No fire and rescue, police or local authority personnel have visited the academy prior to this incident. But we have been upgrading fire prevention measures in stages, as advised by the relevant agencies, for the safety of our students.

“In fact we are thinking of setting up a fire squad to educate and instill awareness in the students and teachers on what to do in the event of any untoward incident or emergency,” he said.
