KUALA LUMPUR – January 29, 2018: After the official Visit Malaysia Year 2020 (VMY2020) logo launched at the Asean Tourism Forum 2018 (ATF) last week was torn to shreds on social media, some decided to create their own designs.
Here are some examples of the designs by netizens and local graphic designers:
Despite the negative reactions to the official logo, Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz insisted that it was good enough and that the ministry had no intention of changing it.
The VMY2020 campaign is projected to welcome 36 million tourists to the country and bring RM168 billion in receipts.
A peek into social media revealed that many were not satisfied with Nazri’s statement, with some calling him arrogant.
“Nazri is being arrogant towards the logo issue, no one will criticise if the logo is beautiful in the first place,” wrote Syukri Ibrahim in his tweet.
In Facebook, one Justin Thivagar said the logo was a disgrace to all graphic designers in Malaysia.
“Well at least they realize that they are being slammed. This logo is a disgrace to all those graphic designers out there who could have done way better than this,” wrote Justin.
While the reactions to the VMY2020 logo are mostly negative, there are some who think it is actually nice to look at.
“Whilst the design is very 90s, I’m subjectively proud and not at all cynical about having an art-style we can uniquely called our own,” wrote Lee Zhi Fei on his Facebook page.
