A Ukrainian passenger plane crashed shortly after taking off from Tehran today, killing all 176 people on board.

Iran’s Road and Transportation Ministry spokesman Qassem Biniaz was quoted as saying that the plane had taken off from the Imam Khomeini International Airport when a fire struck one of its engines.

The pilot then lost control, sending the plane crashing into the ground

The Boeing 737-800, flown by Ukraine International Airlines with 167 passengers and nine crew members was on its way to Kiev.

The crash killed all on board, Iranian emergency officials and Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said.

The flight took off this morning but stopped sending data almost immediately afterward.

The majority of the passengers were believed to be Iranian students coming back to Ukraine after the winter holidays.

The Boeing 737-800 is an older model of the Boeing 737 MAX, which has been grounded for nearly 10 months following two deadly crashes.
