KUALA LUMPUR – August 10, 2019: The number of signatures for an online petition by AirAsia Bhd to protest against the current rate of Passenger Service Charge (PSC) is rapidly increasing.
At press time — the petition, which was launched by the budget airline yesterday has garnered over 40,000 signatures.
On the petition page, AirAsia maintains that the current PSC rate charged on especially its passengers is unreasonable because klia2, where it is based, is meant to be a low-cost terminal and therefore, passengers should not be paying “the same PSC as the far more well-equipped and luxurious KLIA terminal.”
Those who signed the petition echoed the AirAsia’s view on the PSC rate, and commented how unfair it is to the consumers, especially those who travel via klia2.
Effective July 1 last year — Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad (MAHB) had levied a PSC, in which those flying from klia2 to destinations beyond Asean will be charged RM73.
The current PSC is a jump from the previous rate of RM50 and is now equivalent to the rate paid for the full-service terminal at KLIA.
To ensure air travel remains affordable, AirAsia had refused to collect the additional RM23 from its passengers, for which it is still fighting a lawsuit against MAHB.
Air Asia also believes that high PSC will stifle tourism, hamper economic growth and make Malaysia considerably less attractive to visitors compared to other destinations.
AirAsia has however started to collect the full amount of the PSC from its passengers since yesterday while making it clear that it was doing so under protest.
