KUALA LUMPUR — Sept. 3, 2019: Fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho @ Jho Low once told a political aide that he was a special adviser to Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin of Terengganu at a time when the ruler was Agong.
According to Bernama, this was part of today’s testimony by Datuk Amhari Efendi Nazaruddin, a special officer to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Amhari is a prosecution witness.
Amhari spoke of his first experience appearing before Sultan Mizan at a meeting at the Istana Terengganu here at the end of 2008 on the Terengganu Investment Authority, the predecessor to 1Malaysia Development Berhad which came into being later in 2009 after Najib signed a document to change the name of the company.
The meeting was chaired by Sultan Mizan and among those present were Jho Low and Datuk Aziz, the husband of Tengku Rahimah Almarhum Sultan Mahmud, the younger sister of Sultan Mizan.
Amhari also said that TIA was Low’s idea that became Najib’s baby.
“Jho Low mentioned about setting up TIA. Tuanku Mizan took note of the proposal but left it at that. He did not say anything negative about the proposal.”
Najib is facing four charges of abusing his position to corruptly obtain RM2.3 billion from 1MDB and 21 counts of money laundering.
