KUALA LUMPUR — Nov. 28, 2019: A retired senior civil servant was said to have been worried about what the audit on sovereign fund 1MDB would do to the image of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak but the National Audit Department was ready to defend the report.
At the same time, former auditor-general Tan Sri Ambrin Buang spoke today about his frustrations with the questions raised over the finalisation of the audit prepared by the department in 2016. This Ambrin felt at a meeting at the office of former chief secretary to the government Tan Sri Ali Hamsa, the officer who expressed concern over what the audit would do to Najib’s image.
“I felt so frustrated for so many reasons…. there were a lot of questions about our audit report on 1MDB at that time while it was being finalised. But we were prepared to defend our initial report at the Public Accounts Committee hearing,” testified Ambrin at the trial of Najib and former 1MDB CEO Arul Kanda Kandasamy for tampering with the final audit and abetting respectively.
The other frustration for Ambrin was that those at the meeting sometimes did not understand the role of his department.
An audio recording of the meeting was again played in court today.
